TIPPER LORRIES AND MOBILE PLANT
Overhead Electricity Lines – Put Safety First

Overhead electricity lines can be a hazard if health and safety guidelines are ignored. Tipper lorries and mobile plant operators should always note the position of all overhead lines on site before commencing work.

In quarries, construction and landfill sites, care should be taken to maintain a safe working distance from overhead electricity equipment and to minimise alterations in ground level under power lines. Always remember vehicles and mobile plant do not need to strike the overhead lines for injury to occur – electricity can jump gaps, depending on the voltage and conditions.

Danger of death! The following guidelines will help keep everyone working at and visiting the work site safe:

  • Plan your work and risk assess - identify the locations of all overhead power lines in the vicinity of the work and across entrances and exits.
  • Put control measures in place and develop a safe system of work - erect goal posts, barriers and warning signs to maintain safe clearances.
  • Warn visiting drivers of the presence of overhead power lines.
  • Never raise the bed of a tipper lorry beneath an overhead line or drive under the line with the body of the vehicle raised.
  • Be particularly careful when moving plant or equipment from one place to another, especially with tall machines or those with long booms.
  • Take steps to reduce the risk posed by the overhead power lines by:
    • Telling drivers to unload elsewhere
    • Asking drivers to use a vehicle that does not pose a risk near power lines (such as a small dump truck)
    • Contacting NIE well in advance of the work taking place. There may be a requirement to arrange a temporary disconnection for the duration of the work.

If the vehicle makes contact with the overhead electricity lines, stay put and call for help. If you need to get out to summon help, or because of fire, jump clear as far as possible with both feet together. Never return to the vehicle and keep all people well away from any broken or damaged electricity apparatus. In an emergency or for advice contact NIE on 08457 643 643.

Further information can be obtained by contacting the HSENI www.hseni.gov.uk and ordering a copy of HSE Guidance Note GS6 (Avoidance of danger from overhead electric powerlines).
