PLAY AWAY, PLAY SAFE

Kids often ask us:

• How do you recognise electricity lines and equipment?

The real answer is, that to the untrained eye or without reference to plans it is often not possible to be sure which overhead lines are electricity and which are not. The safe approach is to treat all overhead lines as dangerous and play well away from lines, poles and substations.

• What should I do if my kite flies into an overhead power line?

Never fly kites or model aircraft anywhere near electricity overhead lines. If you are flying a kite or remote controlled model aircraft ensure there are no overhead lines in the vicinity. If the aircraft comes in contact with the line it could bring the line down and cause injury to yourself and others.

If your kite or model aircraft is blown towards an electricity line you must:-

1. Let go of the string or any attached control wire immediately.

2. Never attempt to touch the string to pull the kite free, high voltage electricity can travel down string and you could be electrocuted.

3. Keep yourself and others well away.

4. Telephone Northern Ireland Electricity on 08457 643 643 for help and we can safely remove the kite from the line. If you leave it hanging and say nothing, someone else could get hurt or even killed by touching the hanging string.

• Can I go into a Substation

Sidney Shockz says Absolutely Not! If your ball, or anything else falls inside a substation fence then call the number on the side of the substation (the name of the substation and telephone number to call are on a white sign beside the yellow Danger of Death sign) Give your name, address, name of the substation and a brief description of what is lost.

We can't promise to come immediately, but we will come and rescue your belongings safely, as quickly as we can, and if you tell us where you live we can usually deliver them home for you.

Do not ignore Danger of Death signs
They are there to warn you that electricity is dangerous close up. If you break into substations or get too close to electricity equipment your life will be in danger.
